Laser Eye Surgery
At North Toronto Medical Optometry and Vision Care we provide consultations and referrals for common vision correction surgeries and procedures. Dr. Roshni Echharam or her associate doctors will perform a detailed evaluation of your eye health and vision system to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery.
The following laser eye surgery checklist is a good start to help you determine if LASIK or PRK is right for you.
- Healthy Eyes – if you have severe dry eye, conjunctivitis (pink eye), any bacterial eye infection or eye injury, you need to wait for the condition to completely resolve before having an evaluation for corrective eye surgery. For patients with severe dry eye, LASIK may aggravate this condition. Talk to our eye doctors about a complete dry eye assessment pre-operatively to determine if your dry eye can be treated prior to surgery, which in turn would lead to a more successful laser eye surgery result. Certain eye conditions like glaucoma; keratoconus, cataracts, retinal and optic nerve diseases are exclusions for corrective eye surgery.
- Corneal Thickness – At North Toronto Medical Optometry and Vision Care we use Optovue Ivue anterior segment OCT to measure your corneal thickness (pachymetry) and to determine a complete thickness profile of your cornea. These measurements allow us to recommend the corrective surgery procedure that best suits you.
- Age – a good laser surgery candidate must be at least 18 years in age.
- Stable vision for at least a year – It's important for refractive errors to be stable for at least 12 months before undergoing any refractive surgery.
- Good general health – Contraindications to laser eye surgery may include certain uncontrolled degenerative conditions or uncontrolled autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren’s Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and infectious diseases.
- Pregnancy – Hormonal changes can alter the shape of your cornea, leading to temporary changes in your vision. Surgery should not be performed until your hormones and vision have returned to normal after pregnancy. This could take up to 6 months post partum.
