Treating MGD with Lipiflow

LipiFlow is the only electronic device cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of (MGD) Meibomian gland dysfunction. LipiFlow utilizes Vectored Thermal Pulsation technology – a patented algorithm of a precise heat of 42.5 °C (109 °F) that is applied to the inner eyelids with directed gentle massage to the outer eyelids to remove obstructions or congealed oil from the meibomian glands. This treatment is designed to restore the natural flow of oil to the tear film. The goal of the LipiFlow treatment is to unblock clogged and dying meibomian glands, and to restore normal oil production from these glands, thereby stopping atrophy of these glands.

LipiFlow is not a cure for MGD or dry eye. Studies show that 79% of patients undergoing LipiFlow treatment showed improved dry eye symptoms just one month after treatment.

All patients are seen for a follow-up 4-6 weeks post treatment for a reassessment. At this appointment, our eye doctors will prescribe a maintenance treatment for you to help keep your eyelid glands healthy.
